Hyperfibrinogenemia is associated with specific histocytological composition and complications of atherosclerotic carotid plaques in patients affected by transient ischemic attacks.

BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that hyperfibrinogenemia is an independent risk factor for cerebrovascular atherosclerosis. However, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We studied whether hyperfibrinogenemia could modify the histological composition of atherosclerotic plaque and precipitate carotid thrombosis resulting from rupture of the plaque. METHODS AND ...

Transient ischemic attacks associated with hypotension in hypertensive patients with carotid artery stenosis.

In a group of 132 patients with transient ischemic attacks ((TIAs) 7 patients (4 men, 3 women, ages 64 to 81) had TIAs preceded by hypotension. The average fall of mean blood pressure during an attack was 26.4 +/- 5.5 mm Hg (SD). Only one of these patients had a TIA which was not preceded by hypotension. This episode occurred during a paroxysm of coughing. All 7 of these patients had hypertensi...

Expression of fibromodulin in carotid atherosclerotic plaques is associated with diabetes and cerebrovascular events.

AIMS The small leucine-rich proteoglycans fibromodulin and lumican are functionally related extracellular matrix proteins involved in the regulation of collagen fiber formation. Fibromodulin-deficient apolipoprotein E-null mice have decreased vascular retention of lipids and reduced development of atherosclerosis suggesting that fibromodulin may influence the disease process. The aim of the pre...

Differences in the occurrence of carotid transient ischemic attacks associated with antiplatelet aggregation therapy.

Differences in the Occurrence of Carotid Transient Ischemic Attacks Associated With Antiplatelet Aggregation Therapy • Twenty-six of 117 consecutive patients with a provisional diagnosis of transient ischemic attacks answered the following criteria: (1) transient hypofunction of an area supplied by a branch of an internal carotid artery, (2) no evidence of infarction, (3) carotid and vertebral ...
